Apple has launched iOS 16 updates for iPhones today. These updates include new security and privacy features designed to protect users from spyware, domestic abuse, and password hacks that can lead to online account breaches.

Here is an overview of the key features in this update:

Lockdown Mode

Lockdown Mode is a security feature that temporarily disables certain iPhone functions commonly exploited by spyware developers to bypass security measures. By deactivating these functions, the likelihood of malware being installed on your device remotely is reduced. This feature is particularly useful for vulnerable groups like journalists, activists, and politicians, who are often targeted by their governments. While Lockdown Mode limits iPhone capabilities, it strengthens security against potential attacks.

Rapid Security Response

iOS 16 introduces automated updates for the iOS software and a new feature called Rapid Security Response. This feature enables iPhones to implement security fixes promptly after Apple releases them. The aim is to deliver critical security updates discreetly to devices without requiring users to install a complete update each time. This ensures that emergency updates, especially for actively exploited vulnerabilities, can be swiftly deployed to devices without user intervention.

Safety Check

Safety Check is a new feature in iOS 16 that serves as a panic button, allowing users to immediately halt all shared access to their accounts and data in unsafe situations, such as abusive relationships. This feature includes an “emergency reset” option that promptly blocks access to messages, applications, location data, and other sensitive information. Safety Check acknowledges the real-world challenges many individuals face and emphasizes the potential negative effects of technology.

Passkeys

Passkeys offer a potential solution for widespread adoption of passwordless authentication. By using Apple Passkeys, users can authenticate into websites and applications with their smartphone instead of a password. This method enhances security by verifying identity through Face ID or Touch ID, reducing risks associated with leaked, forgotten, or stolen passwords. Passkeys adhere to industry standards set by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, enabling passwordless technology compatibility across different devices and platforms. Collaboration among major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft further promotes Passkey adoption.

Copy and Paste Permission

In a minor yet impactful security enhancement, iOS 16 now restricts applications from accessing the contents of the device’s clipboard. This limitation prevents apps from viewing copied text, images, or data intended for pasting into other applications. This feature safeguards sensitive information like passwords from unauthorized access or sharing. With the pasteboard protection feature, users have control over pasting permissions, adding an extra layer of security to prevent inadvertent exposure of personal information online.
