To achieve it’s goal of the “Zero Fossil Fuels on the Galápagos Islands Initiative” Siemens Smart Infrastructure supports Ecuador with a local energy solution, which is the first of it’s kind. While being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Galápagos Islands still used a diesel-based power supply. The new 1.2 MW hybrid power plant on Isabela Island is based on 100 percent renewable energy sources. By using solar power and biodiesel with a battery storage system 42 tons of diesel and 143 tons of CO2 and will be saved and the energy will be available 24 hours a day. The new power plant also had to be expandable for future demand development, which was considered right from the start of the project.
