The Last of Us 2 has a new, firm (and hopefully final) release date
The Last of Us 2 – or The Last of Us: Part 2, if we’re using its proper name – is the long-anticipated sequel to the iconic post-apocalyptic narrative game and is likely to be one of the biggest PS4 games to launch this year.
After a frustrating series of delays, The Last of Us 2 has a new, firm-and-hopefully-final release date. The game will now release on June 19, 2020.
Given the first game was hailed by players and critics alike as a masterpiece with excellent, emotional storytelling and engaging, realistic characters, we have to admit that the decision to release a follow-up isn’t particularly shocking – even if the end of the game seemed pretty conclusive. We’d probably have been more surprised if there wasn’t one. And yet, when The Last of Us 2 was first announced back in 2016, we’d be lying if we said our hearts didn’t skip a beat.
With a new release date to look forward to however, patient fans have a new problem to contend with – a huge, spoiler-filled leak has hit the internet, showing off gameplay footage and key story beats. For now, here’s everything we know about The Last of Us 2 so far.
The Last of Us 2 will release on June 19, 2020.
The Last of Us 2 was initially due to release on February 21, 2020. However, Naughty Dog later announced that the game’s release date was being pushed back to May 29, 2020.
The game’s director, Neil Druckmann, apologized in a blog post and explained that the developer wanted to prioritize game quality over a punctual launch.
“We realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality,” Druckmann wrote.
Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was then delayed a second time in early April 2020 when Sony said that it needed time to sort out logistical issues around the game and give the team at Naughty Dog some more time to finish up.
Here’s hoping this latest June 19 release date is the final delay we have to endure.
